Spinalonga

Despite its rich legacy dating all the way back to antiquity, Spinalonga is however best known as the host of the leper community from 1903 to 1957, and as one of the last active leper colonies in Europe, reaching a number of nearly 400 inhabitants during the outbreak of the illness.

Monumental Ancient Olive Tree Azoria

With a base-wide trunk (diameter) of 22.10 metres and a height of 6.90 metres, this tree is one of the oldest trees in the world and the oldest tree in Europe.

Toplou Monastery

Toplou Monastery or Monastery of Panagia Akrotiriani (Our Lady of Akrotiri) is one of the most important and beautiful monasteries in Crete. The monastery with its imposing belfry, 33 metres high, stands in a harsh, almost desert landscape with giant wind turbines rotating in the background; this is one of the first windfarms in Crete.
